Microbiology
The department of Microbiology & Bioinformatics offers B.Sc ., M.Sc Microbiology ., M.Sc Applied Microbiology., M.Sc Bioinformatics & Research programme like M.Phil & Ph.D (Part time and full time). It has dedicated, experienced and highly qualified teachers. The department laboratory is well equipped with modern, sophisticated and imported instrument like HPLC, COD incubator, Fermentor, Sonicator, UV spectrophotometer, Vacuum concentrator, ice crystal making machine, -80°C deep freezer, which will meet the international standard. There are separate inoculation hoods, preparation and washing area of Microbiological needs. Students are given academic industrial training programme. The Department offers value added programme like nutrition and Dietary management, Plant and Animal Biotechnology, Bioinformatics and clinical Microbiology. We train the students to meet the industrial and medical demands and to become self entrepreneurs in the field of Mushroom cultivation, Vermi composting, Biofertilisers and Biopesticides.

Bioinformatics
Bioinformatics is an emerging scientific interdisciplinary course representing the combined knowledge of Biology, Computer science, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Biophysics, Chemistry, Statistics. Bioinformatics is essential to handle the enormous amount of Biological data and information being generated by Researchers identifying the lengthy DNA sequences of human beings, plants, animals, and microbes blue print and biological data of microorganisms. The courses have wide scope in Bioinformatics companies and Pharmaceutical companies, and Biotechnology companies and other Industrial Applications. The Department with state of art laboratory with high performance computing systems, which are connected to one high –end server with Accelerys (USA) commercial software and 30 technologically upgraded computers. The alumni are placed in reputed Bioinformatics and Software companies across the country and in abroad. The course also motivates the students to go in for freelance consulting. The department extends facilities to Research scholars of other institutions.

  Staff Profile

Dr. Ram Rammohan, M.Sc., M.S., Ph.D. Head, Department of Microbiology and Bioinformatics Dr. Rammohan has over 20 years of teaching and research experience, including 4 years industrial experience. Dr. Rammohan obtained his doctorate in Interdisciplinary Biomedical Sciences from Northeastern University, Boston, USA. His research areas include design & development of liposomes / microspheres for tissue targeting and imaging, and drug delivery to tumors and tissues. Dr. Rammohan was responsible for establishment of research facilities for Millipore Life Sciences and Membrane R&D divisions (currently Biosciences) in Bangalore, India, which serves this multinational company in product validation, applications and technical support. Dr. Rammohan was a faculty member in the Dept. of Pharmaceutical Sciences, and the Dept. of Medical Laboratory Science, Northeastern University, Boston, where he had earlier completed his Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship in the Laboratory of Advanced Pharmaceutical Research. He was also a Member, Curriculum Design & Development Committee, Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Northeastern University, Boston. He is a Life Member of various scientific Associations, and is a Member of the Phi Kappa Phi Interdisciplinary Honor Society since 1998. He has published and presented over 30 research articles, and is the author of 3 chapters in a monograph on Rheumatic Fever, brought out by the American Registry of Pathology, Washington D.C. He was a co-awardee of the Berson-Yalow Award (Scientific Paper No. 262) at the 48th Annual Meeting of the Society of Nuclear Medicine, 2001. His research work also won the ASNC-6 Young Investigator Award at the 6th Annual American Society for Nuclear Cardiology Symposium and Scientific Session (ASNC-6), 2001. Dr. Rammohan is a Freelance Editor and Proof-Reader for various scientific books.

• Department has signed an MOU with Helini Biomolecules, Sai Biosciences Research ltd., to strengthen industrial and academic collaboration.
• Under earn while you learn programme, students are doing part time job at various institutions.
• 18 students have completed M.Phil programme in the area of Biotechnology and Microbiology under Bharathiar University and Bharathidasan University.
• 5 staff members are currently pursuing their doctoral programme.
• National and international Symposium / seminar / scientific exhibition were organized in every academic year.
• Student scientific seminar / extension programme were conducted by staff and students.
• Current industrial training programme were undertaken by UG & PG students.
• Department was actively conducting add on programme / compulsory diploma / participatory programme like:
